As a family photographer in Short Hills, NJ, one of my greatest joys is helping families capture their genuine love and connection. Family portraits are not just about smiling at the camera — they’re about telling your unique story.
Over the years, I’ve discovered that the best photos come from sessions that feel natural, fun, and true to who you are. Whether you’re planning your first session or want to make the most of your next one, here are my top five tips to make your family photo session enjoyable and your portraits unforgettable.
The best family photos happen when everyone feels relaxed and comfortable. Instead of worrying about whether the kids will behave perfectly, focus on doing activities you love together. Play games, read books, dance, or simply snuggle — whatever feels authentic to your family.
When children are allowed to be themselves, their personalities shine through, and your photos will reflect real laughter, love, and connection.

Your family photos should feel personal, and the location sets the tone. Many families in Short Hills, NJ, and surrounding areas choose their home — it’s where everyone feels most comfortable, and the memories made there are priceless.
Your home doesn’t need to be perfect; it’s the love inside that matters. If we shoot at home, I’ll work with natural light and adjust the space so nothing distracts from your family. Outdoor locations you love — like a favorite park or trail — are also wonderful choices.

Wardrobe plays a big role in creating timeless portraits. Choose clothing that flatters, feels comfortable, and doesn’t distract from your connection. Coordinating colors in a complementary palette works beautifully, but you don’t need to match exactly. I recommend starting with an outfit that makes mom feel confident and then styling the rest of the family around it. Aim for colors that complement each other or highlight features like eye color, and keep the overall look cohesive by choosing either all casual or all dressy.

Light is everything in photography. I always begin sessions by finding the best light, whether indoors or outdoors. That said, weather can change quickly, and it’s a good idea to keep an eye on the forecast.
Rain doesn’t have to cancel a session, but it does affect the light. Planning ahead ensures we make the most of the conditions and capture your family in the most flattering way.

Timing is key for happy, relaxed photos. Plan your session for when everyone is rested and fed — usually mornings after breakfast or afternoons after naps and lunch — since hungry or tired kids (and parents!) have a harder time enjoying the experience. Morning or afternoon after naps are ideal for little ones, and it helps to bring along simple snacks like cheese bites, crackers, or marshmallows. Avoid messy treats like lollipops that take too long to eat and can leave colorful stains on faces.

Moms often spend so much time getting everyone else ready that they forget to plan for themselves. Treat yourself to hair and makeup, or simply give yourself extra time so you feel confident and relaxed. When you feel your best, it shows in the photos.

One of my favorite recent sessions in Short Hills, NJ was with sweet Hazel and her family. We planned the shoot around the activities they love — including reading books together with toy microphones. The kids lit up, the parents laughed, and I was able to capture their story in a natural, authentic way.
That’s the beauty of family photography: when you focus on what makes your family unique, your photos become timeless memories you’ll treasure forever.
