Family Photographer Summit NJ | Capturing the Beautiful Chaos of Family Life
When this family reached out to book a session with a family photographer in Summit NJ, what the mom wanted to capture was simple: their everyday life. The chaos and the joy of it. The kids at this age, the two family dogs always in the middle of everything, the moments in the kitchen baking with her daughter, the dancing, the cuddling, the little boy who just wants to be part of whatever his big sister is doing.
That is not a photo session. That is their life. And their life is exactly what I am here to photograph.
Why Families Choose a Family Photographer in Summit NJ
Summit has the kind of small-town charm and accessibility to NYC that makes it one of my favorite places to photograph. The homes tend to have generous light — wide windows, warm interiors, kitchens that actually get used. The tree-lined streets and dog-friendly outdoor spaces mean there is always a natural place to extend the session outside when conditions allow.
For this session we started inside, moving through the living room and kitchen where so much of their daily life actually happens. Then we headed to the backyard where the kids ran, the dogs chased, and dad swung the little ones in the air. Every space told a different part of their story.
What a Summit NJ Family Photography Session Looks Like
Before the session, we’ll meet for a Design and Styling Consultation. This is where we map the light in your home, make clothing decisions, talk through how to involve your children in a way that actually works, and decide whether to extend the session outdoors. You can read more about what lifestyle family photography actually means before we meet.
Summit has exceptional outdoor session options — Reeves-Reed Arboretum, the grass stretches along Springfield Avenue, Briant Park in neighboring Springfield, and the neighborhood streets themselves during fall foliage or early spring. Most families choose to begin indoors and extend outside when conditions allow.
On session day, the session moves through your home naturally. I photograph around what the family is actually doing — morning routines, outdoor play, a meal, whatever feels authentic to how you spend time together. Children are infinitely more cooperative when they’re doing something they enjoy rather than being asked to hold still.
The Beautiful Chaos of Real Family Life
Real family life is chaotic. Kids run off. Dogs insert themselves into every frame. Someone always needs a snack at exactly the wrong moment. A toddler decides that now — right now — is the time to test every limit.
These are not problems to manage around. They are the material. The photographs that families display most prominently years later are almost never the ones where everyone was looking at the camera. They are the ones where something real happened and someone was present enough to photograph it. The girl dancing with the dog in the living room. The little boy by the kitchen sink, curious about the water. The parents catching each other’s eye in the middle of all of it.
This is what I photograph.
A Morning in Their Home
The session started inside where most of their life actually happens — the living room, the kitchen, the spaces that hold the daily rhythm of this family. Their daughter was already in the kitchen with mom. Their son was following close behind, doing what 18-month-olds do best. The dogs were everywhere at once.
At some point the cupcakes came out. Sprinkles went on the frosting, some made it to the cupcakes, some did not. The dogs positioned themselves with great strategic patience beneath the counter. The kids giggled. Nobody was performing for the camera. Nobody needed to.
When we moved outside to the backyard the energy shifted — more running, more chasing, dad swinging kids in the air, the spaniels finally getting the space they had been waiting for. The morning light was soft and even and completely forgiving. We had everything we needed.
Photographing Pets as Part of the Family
The two Brittany Spaniels in this session were not props or accessories — they were fully participating members of this family. They ran, they cuddled, they positioned themselves strategically near the cupcakes. They showed up in almost every frame and made every frame better.
I love including pets in family sessions. Dogs especially have a way of bringing out the most natural versions of people — kids light up around them, parents relax, and the whole session takes on a warmth that is very hard to manufacture any other way.
My approach is to let the dogs settle in on their own terms. Once they see that the family is relaxed and comfortable, they calm down naturally — less barking, less anxious energy, more of that sweet presence that makes them worth photographing in the first place. That is why I typically bring pets into the session in the second half, after everyone has warmed up. By then the dogs are part of the scene rather than a distraction from it.
Those are the photographs families keep forever. The dog sprawled across dad’s feet. The toddler wrapping both arms around a neck that is twice the size of their own

When to Book Your Summit NJ Family Session
The most popular seasons for outdoor family sessions in Summit are spring and fall — May, September, and October in particular. These months offer the most favorable light and conditions and they fill quickly. I recommend booking two to three months in advance for spring and fall sessions and one to two months for winter and summer.
There is genuinely no wrong season for an in-home session. Summer light through a window in the early morning has a completely different quality from fall afternoon light — both are beautiful, and the right choice depends on your family’s schedule as much as anything else.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you photograph in Summit NJ regularly?
Yes — Summit and the surrounding Union County towns are part of my regular service area. I photograph there throughout the year.
What age ranges do you work with?
All of them. I photograph newborns, toddlers, school-age children, teens, and multi-generational family sessions. The approach adjusts based on who is in the frame but the commitment to capturing something real stays the same.
How far in advance should I book a family photographer in Summit NJ
For spring and fall sessions, two to three months is ideal. For winter and summer, one to two months usually gives enough flexibility. If you have a specific date in mind, reach out as early as possible.
Do you offer outdoor sessions in Summit?
Yes — I photograph at Reeves-Reed Arboretum, Briant Park, and other locations throughout the area. We will choose your location together during the Design and Styling Consultation based on the season, the light, and what your family enjoys.
What if my kids won’t cooperate?
They do not need to. I photograph families, not performances. In fifteen years of family photography I have never left a session without beautiful images — even with the most energetic, least cooperative toddlers. Children photograph beautifully when they are being themselves.
