Best Time for Maternity Photos NJ & NYC | Complete Timing Guide
There is a question I hear from almost every expecting mother who reaches out: when is the best time for maternity photos in NJ and NYC?
Most photographers will tell you 28 to 34 weeks. That is genuinely good advice. But the real answer is a little more human than that.
Lindsay booked her session for 35 weeks. She and her husband Matt were in the middle of a move and this was the best timing in their new Montclair home. They were about to welcome their first baby and they wanted the session to feel like them, not like a generic maternity photoshoot.
Professional hair and makeup was done before I arrived. Their dog sprawled on the bed like he owned the place. She wore white lace and stood by the crib they had spent months getting ready. The couple got married in Napa Valley, so we incorporated wine glasses into the session — one of those personal details that makes a photograph feel like a portrait of a real life, not a staged moment. Then we moved outside to Van Vleck House and Gardens in Montclair NJ, where the late afternoon light fell across them. Their baby came at 38 weeks. Those three weeks between her session and her due date felt like nothing, and the images are everything.
So when is the best time for maternity photos in NJ and NYC? Here is everything you need to know.
Why 28 to 34 Weeks Is the Best Time for Maternity Photos in NJ
Between 28 and 34 weeks, most expecting mothers are in a beautiful physical window. The belly is full and round, beautifully visible in photographs, and most women are still feeling comfortable enough to move, pose, and enjoy the experience.
Before 28 weeks, the belly may not yet have the shape and presence that reads as beautifully on camera. The roundness that makes maternity images so striking tends to emerge more fully in the third trimester. Some families choose to photograph earlier — especially if there are older siblings whose energy and attention span are better captured sooner — but 28 weeks is the earliest I typically recommend for classic maternity images.
After 34 weeks, the equation shifts. The belly is visually stunning, but physical comfort can become a real factor. That said, I photograph sessions at 36 and even 38 weeks regularly, and the results are extraordinary. Full-term bellies have a presence in photographs that is genuinely breathtaking. We simply adapt the session accordingly.
What If You Are Feeling Uncertain About Timing?
Trust how you feel over any fixed timeline. If you are having a particularly comfortable third trimester, pushing to 32 or 34 weeks will give you images with more belly presence. If you are ready to meet your baby by 30 weeks and energy is at a premium, book for 28 to 30 weeks and enjoy the session while you are still feeling your best.
I would rather photograph a session at 29 weeks with a relaxed, comfortable mother than a technically better-timed session at 33 weeks that felt physically difficult. The best maternity photos come from families who are present, comfortable, and genuinely enjoying themselves.
Recently I had a client who booked late and then her toddler got sick, pushing the session to 10 days before her due date. We did it anyway. Her belly was extraordinary. Her face told the whole story of a woman who was more than ready to meet her baby. Those images have a different kind of beauty — raw and full and real.
In-Home vs. Outdoor Maternity Photos in NJ and NYC
Timing also affects your choice of setting. Spring and fall in New Jersey and New York City offer the most favorable outdoor conditions — moderate temperatures, beautiful natural light, and seasonal beauty that photographs exceptionally well. The cherry blossoms in Morristown in April, golden light in October, the first warm days of May — these conditions combine with a well-timed session to create images that feel genuinely seasonal and alive.
Indoor and in-home sessions are more flexible with timing and weather. I typically recommend beginning indoors — in your bedroom, nursery, or wherever the best light falls in your home — and then moving outside if conditions allow. This gives us variety without the risk of planning an entirely outdoor session around weather.
How Far in Advance Should You Book?
Book your maternity session during your second trimester — ideally by 20 to 24 weeks. This gives us time to schedule a Design and Styling Consultation before the session, during which we will discuss clothing, location, light, and what you are hoping to feel in the photographs. By the time the session arrives, every decision is already made.
Spring and fall are the most popular seasons for maternity sessions in NJ and NYC, and dates fill quickly. If you are due in spring, reach out in the fall. If you are due in fall, reach out in summer. The earlier you book, the more flexibility you have for both session timing and date selection.
Frequently Asked Questions About the Best Time for Maternity Photos in NJ and NYC
Is 30 weeks too early for maternity photos?
Not at all. 30 weeks is within the ideal window for most expecting mothers. The belly is beautifully present and most women feel comfortable and energetic. Many of my favorite sessions have been photographed at exactly this point.
Can I do maternity photos at 36 or 38 weeks?
Yes — and the results can be stunning. Late-pregnancy bellies have a visual presence that photographs beautifully. We adapt the session to your comfort level, focusing on posing and movement that feels good for you. Bring a support person and plan for a slightly shorter session if needed.
Should I include my partner and older children?
Absolutely. Maternity sessions are about this particular moment in your family’s story and that story includes everyone in it. Partners, older siblings, and family pets are all welcome and encouraged.
Do you photograph indoor and outdoor maternity sessions?
Yes. Most sessions begin indoors in your home and extend outdoors if weather permits. We discuss location and setting during your Design and Styling Consultation before the session.
